How to keep plastic grocery bags neat and tidy

Home hack: Keeping plastic grocery bags nice and tidy

This is GENIUS! It takes just a few seconds to wrap plastic grocery bags into neat and tidy little balls.

Are your plastic grocery bags multiplying like Gremlins sprayed with a hose? Are they spilling out of whatever you’ve shoved them into? Use this awesome hack to tame those bags and show them who’s boss!

Why are there so many of them?

We generally take our own reusable bags to the supermarket because we are super green they hold way more and are stronger than the plastic bags. You know what happens to Gremlins if you get them wet, right? They multiply like crazy. I’m starting to think that storing more than one bag in one place has the same effect! They seem to go from three to three hundred in no time flat.

If you’re suffering from plastic grocery bag Armageddon, this hack is going to change your life!

Or at least help you keep the bags stored neatly.

The process is amazingly simple. I learned it from my in-person local friend (I do have a couple of those!) Kim Lan, of Redefining Disabled and when she showed me how to do it I was all like **POW! Mind. Blown.**  I know. She laughs at my silliness too.

I’ll describe the process here but your best bet is to watch the my Periscope video or GoPro head-cam video to see how it’s done.

  1. Shake out the bag. Grab one corner of the closed end and pull down to straighten.
  2. Begin wrapping the bag around one of your fingers. If you twist the bag as you wrap it will make the last step a bit easier.
  3. When you have wound almost all of it around slip the circle toward the end of the finger.
  4. Using your wrapping hand, slip the end (it will be the handle end) through the circle and pull gently.

Now you have a tight and tidy plastic bag! An amazing number of these will fit into an empty plastic grocery sack. They are easy to take out one by one (no more heap-o-bags spilling out onto the floor!) and easy to open back up.

Is this a home hack you’ve heard of before? Am I the last one to know? Tell me in the comments!
